EMBA - Curriculum

In the YU EMBA program, you will address international leadership and business issues from many perspectives. The curriculum reinforces the development of theoretical and conceptual skills in tandem with practical problem solving.

Course structure:

The YU EMBA is offered over a period of twenty-one (21) months, in a format suitable for busy executives. The YU EMBA curriculum consists of 42 ‐credit hours: 30 credits accrue from the core courses and 8 credits from the free electives courses, and 4+ credits will be earned through the Individual Project - Thesis. Students who complete one course each month can anticipate finishing their EMBA in twenty months.

All courses generally are taught in Riyadh once per month in an intensive evening mode divided into two modules:

  • Preparatory module: this module will be taught by the YU faculty members to prepare the students for the Main Module. It is delivered before the beginning of the Main module as three (3) clock hours per day for ten (10) consecutive working days.
  • Main module: this module is taught by our International faculty members. It is deliver of either:
o  six (6) clock hours per day for five (5) consecutive days = 30 clock hours OR
o  five (5) clock hours per day on Thursday & Friday, followed by three (3) clock hours per night Saturday & Sunday and Tuesday & Wednesday, followed by four (4) clock hours the next Thursday & Friday = 30 clock hours.

The structure of the program can be seen in the below illustration:

5. Course Description

1. Business English for Executives (BEE) course
The Al Yamamah English language training center has organized several Top-up English courses for students planning to enroll in the EMBA program, but who need refresher courses in research and report writing, critical reading, and making oral presentations. These two months 80 credits courses are designed to help EMBA students start their studies with the skills they need to be successful in the fast-paced and challenging YU EMBA.  Students whose basic English skills are low will need to enroll in the traditional SILC English language programs to bring their English language skills up the TOEFL 550 level.

2. Business Administration Foundation (BAF) course (Max 12 credit hours)
At YU, our EMBA curriculum is based on the understanding that each student has a strong foundation in each of the central business disciplines. Throughout the EMBA coursework, the faculty will look for students to be engaged in the discussion of applied cases that link business theory to application.  As such, each EMBA student must have a fundamental knowledge of the terminology of international management and be able to develop systemic links between the disciplines and functions of a business.
Foundation courses include:

Business Administration Foundation Courses (12 credits in two months)
1  BUS 490  Principles of Management  (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)
2  BUS 491   Principles of Marketing  (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)
3  BUS 492   Principles of Accounting    (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)
4  BUS 493   Principles of Finance  (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)
5  BUS 494   Intro. to Economics-Micro/Macro  (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)
6  BUS 495   Introduction to Statistics  (2 credits, not counted in GPA/ degree requirements)

For students who do not have an undergraduate academic background in business administration, Foundation Courses may be required for admission into (and/or concurrent to enrollment in) the degree credit portion of the program. A grade of C=2.0 or better is required in the Foundation Courses (see grading system). The Admissions Committee will determine which of the pre-requisite Foundation Courses will be required for each candidate, based upon transcript analysis of recent coursework wherein grades of C or better were earned in similar prerequisite courses taken in English and/or through additional professional-level training.  For students who do not have adequate, applicable work experience, a non-credit 8-week internship may be required before graduation with the EMBA.

3. Core Curriculum (32 credit hours)
The YU EMBA program devotes significant time and resources to the mastery of management knowledge and the development of leadership skills.
The YU EMBA requires that students have the intellectual and physical capacity to devote all of their attention and time to the course preparation and course participation elements of an intensive post graduate program. Around three weeks each month (for twenty months, after the Foundation Courses) are required of the student in order to spend evenings and weekends focused upon reading, studying, case analysis, and participation in the course preparation and participation.
The core curriculum consists of 34 credits (16 courses), which can be completed in sixteen months. A brief summary of the core curriculum is presented below.  Please note that the dates/timings of courses may vary as the YU EMBA in International Management & Leadership utilizes international partner university professors and their availability will vary from month to month.
